10 disadvantages to reading a lot
Starting about two years ago, I decided to read 100 books a year. I am in my second year and have already read over 250. There are mostly advantages, but here are some disadvantages.
1. It can become an obsession
2. If you stay in the same genre, you can get a lot of repetition of ideas
3. It takes a lot of time
I do most of my "reading" with 3x audiobooks while walking the dog or working outside.
4. Maybe there are other things that you should be doing
5. you get lots of information floating around in your brain
6. If you don't keep track of what you read it has very little value
I take notes on many books and keep a spreadsheet of all of them: I get 10x out of the ones I take notes on.
7. You start many sentences with "I am reading about..." or "I just read that..."
8. You can be a know-it-all
9. You are not fun at parties
10. If you are trying to hit an arbitrary number, you will avoid longer books
Guilty, but I have also tackled some very long books.
