10 Effects of "taking time off" from NotePd
I had a streak of over 2 years of daily lists and then dropped off due to spam. Back this week.
1. Having the streak mattered
I was able to prove to myself that I could stick to a habit over an extended period of time
2. "todo" lists for the weekend were still at least 10 items long during the break
3. My mind had been trained to come up with ideas
Making lists "worked" and the creativity took longer to atrophy than the list-making habit.
4. I found that lists were "focusing functions"
Over the course of a few months 80% or more of my lists could have been meh but writing a daily list helped me to explore topics over time, and I was able to make similar lists spread out over weeks or months and kept concepts active in my brain I guess within working memory
5. without the lists I "drifted" more
I would find myself thinking "what do I do now?" more often without the lists.
6. when I had the lists going I got a lot more accomplished
If you want something done give it to a busy person
7. I had been missing the structure of NotePD
8. I kept up with other positive habits
Gratitude journal (<2 mins per day), daily light exercise, reading 100 books per year, a few others.
