10 hard truths to accept in life

    1. Your boss probably hates you

They resent you. They feel intimidated and threatened by you. You take vacation days and sick days which means they need to work harder. They have to train you, coach you and listen to your problems which is why roles are being automated and replaced with robots.

    2. You are not a smart as you think

Find a topic you think you know a lot about and there will be someone who knows more. Someone who has done more research, read more books and can poke holes in your argument. But that is a good thing. It is humbling. It allows you to play dumb, and in doing so helps to identify who the smartest person in the room is, so you can stand next to them.

    3. Your country has committed atrocities in its past

The holocaust, slavery, genocide, religious wars, decimation of native species. Every country is guilty of something. Dont ignore it, dont celebrate it, just accept it, and pledge to do better.

    4. Not everyone will like you

You will upset, offend or annoy someone in your life. You could remind them of an ex, support an opposing team or just have a different personality. Stop trying to be friends with everyone, it wont happen.

    5. You are not a rational being

We like to think we are rational. That we make informed unbiased decisions, but deep down we are highly motivated by emotions. Advertisers and marketers know this more than anyone, and have profited widly from it.

    6. You are biased

Everyone holds different types of biases due to their environment and upbringing. Some are more noticeable than others .

    7. Not everything is a lesson, sometimes you just fail.

This is a great line that Dwight says to Ryan in the US version of The Office. I've always liked this but put my own spin on it. Not everything is an immediate lesson, sometimes it takes a while to understand why you fail. Failure is painful, and it can be hard to see the lesson at first. It usually takes time.

    8. Life isn't always fair

Bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. People are wrongly convicted, get off on a technicality, born into poverty, born into wealth. Some live to 100, others die much when a child. There are many things outside you control that will seem unfair, but the one thing you can control is how you react to them.

    9. Your family history probably has some skeletons in its closet

Go back far enough and there will be something there. I personally discovered a few years ago that my grandfather had an entire other family which he kept secret his whole life.

    10. You will die

We learn this early on but dont want to accept it. Our time on this earth is limited but so many of us waste it. Which reminds me of one of my favorite Charles Bukowski quotes - "We’re all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn’t".
