10 places that offer (or may offer) birthright citizenship
1. Brazil
If your child is born there, it's automatic citizenship and you get citizenship after one year of residency.
2. Argentina
Similar.
3. Lesotho
One of the few countries if not the only one in Africa with unconditional jus soli.
4. Machias Seal Island or North Rock (Canada / USA)
Both islands are claimed by both the USA and Canada. I remember reading something saying that technically, your child might get both citizenship if they were born there (I can't remember which island it was talking about).
Machias Seal Island is administered by Canada, though. So I'm guessing it might lead to Canadian citizenship? There's a Canadian lighthouse there.
North Rock is uninhabited. Tricky to have a kid there. You'd need to bring a whole team with you and be able to leave for a hospital asap if there's an issue.
Also I don't know if the double citizenship would actually work, maybe the child would only get one or the other (or neither?). I just remember reading about it and thought it was interesting.
5. Trinidad and Tobago
Just sounds like a cool country to be from.
6. Northern Ireland
This is a cool one. As long as at least one parent is legally residing in Northern Ireland or Ireland, the child can claim both British and Irish citizenship.
7. Portugal
At least one parent must have been legally resident for at least one year leading up to the child's birth.
8. New Caledonia (France)
France doesn't have unconditional jus soli, but if you're born there and then live at least 5 years in France before you turn 18, you get citizenship. Assuming New Caledonia becomes independent at some point after the birth of your kid, in theory it's possible your kid might eventually have both citizenships if there's the possibility of keeping the French one after acquiring the New Caledonian one.
9. Cook Islands or Niue (New Zealand)
New Zealand has unconditional jus soli. If your child were to be born in the Cook Islands or Niue and the territory gained independence in the future, maybe your kid could retain New Zealand citizenship while also acquiring the new one.
10. Eastern Island (Chile)
I know nothing about this so I have no idea if it might become independent one day (ChatGPT just told me about it and I've just started a google search), but the same logic might then apply (Chile offers jus soli).
