10 Things I found interesting about the Istanbul Airport
I was forced to spend approximately 26 hrs. at the airport lately. So, I had time to look around a little bit. In no particular order, some of my observations.
1. Everything under one roof is convenient.
There is no going through security over and over again or having to take a bus or a train to the next terminal. All the concourses are served by one very large, connected transit area.
2. It is likely you will be doing a lot of walking
3. The airport has a Turkish history museum passengers can visit.
The museum costs approx. 13 Euros. In concourse B there is also a smaller free exhibit of the types of exhibits the full experience holds.
4. Beware the electric tricycles
Because of the size of the airport, it is common for some staff to zip around on personal electric trikes. They are almost silent and go quite fast. Keep your eyes open.
5. You can get a little bit of open-air space.
There are separate secure outdoor terraces for both smokers and non-smokers. They are not located near each other either.
6. Yotel airside
If you are going to have an extended layover there is a hotel available that doesn't even require you to go through security. I took advantage of this amenity. Pricey but worth it. I checked out of my hotel room. Took a 10 minute stroll through a couple shops to my departure gate. I was in my seat on the plane less than 30 minutes after leaving my hotel room.
7. Lots of other sleeping options as well.
Budget travelers can find lounge type seating in several areas in most of the concourses. Some are cushioned but most are not.
8. Nap Zone
Concourse B even has a semi-isolated Nap Zone with about 20 of these beach chair type loungers all lined up. The lights can be turned off (as long as no one objects). Unfortunately, it is located next to a children's play area so not the quietest. option.
9. Sleep pods
For a small per hour fee, you can also rent a SleePod. Picture a bunk with hard sides and a retractable roof. With space for hand luggage, and USB charger port, not the worst place to spend a few hours
10. Arby's X2
Like most international airports, most all of the chain restaurants are represented. But Arby's has 2 separate locations in the international transit section of the airport. Never thought beef & cheddar was that popular worldwide.
