10 Unsolved Mysteries

H/T to @DrFritzS for a terrific idea list topic, as well as to @sqadir who did a similar one recently. These mysteries are the ones that have always fascinated me.

    1. What happened to Flight 19?

    Preview

I was obsessed with this topic when I was around 10 years old. A missing squad of five torpedo bombers mysteriously disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle shortly after the end of World War II. Further, one of the planes that went out to find them mysteriously exploded mid-air. None of the planes have ever been found.

    2. Who was Jack the Ripper?

    Preview

An utterly fascinating and grotesque mystery that will likely never be solved.

    3. Who killed JFK?

    Preview

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, and I believe that Lee Harvey Oswald likely acted alone. Still, there are so many open questions that have never been addressed.

The National Archives released a trove of records in 2017 that was supposed to address what the government knew and didn't know during the Warren Commission, and they did, but they were heavily redacted. Why? After all these years, what is there left to hide? Many more documents have yet to be released.

    4. Where did Christopher Columbus land in the New World?

    Preview

Some believe it is modern-day San Salvador, but the true landing point has never been definitively determined. We know it was an island in the Bahamas, but there is no definitive historical or archaeological evidence.

    5. What happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?

    Preview

Seriously, what the f*ck happened out there? Such a bizarre mystery.

    6. What happened to Maura Murray?

    Preview

I saw this story on a television series called Disappeared some years ago and it fascinated me. Maura was a college student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst when one day she lied to her teachers and said she had to miss classes for a family death that did not actually take place, she packed up her car, picked up some booze, and drove off through New Hampshire to Vermont. But, she never arrived. Her car was found crashed on the side of a road. She has not been seen ever since. She literally vanished.

    7. Who was DB Cooper?

    Preview

Who doesn't know this story? On a stormy evening in 1972, a mysterious man who went by the alias Dan Cooper, but more popularly known as DB Cooper, hijacked a flight from Portland to Seattle in order to extort $200,000. Once he received the money, he put a parachute on himself with the money strapped on to him, opened the door, and leaped into history, never to be seen again.

    8. What kind of crazy sh!t is going down at AREA 51?

    Preview

It's no secret that there's nothing but secrets taking place at Area 51. But, what exactly is the Air Force, who operates the base, up to there? Why is it so secretive, and why won't they confirm or deny proposed theories of what takes place there?

    9. What happened to the Lost Roanoke Colony?

    Preview

Sir Walter Raleigh founded an early English colony on a small island on the modern-day North Carolina coast. The governor of the island left for England in 1587 to retrieve supplies and was delayed from returning until 1590. When he did, he found a fortified but completely abandoned colony. The only clue left behind by the colonists was mysterious words carved into tree trunks: CROATOAN and CRO.

    10. How, and why, was Stonehenge built?

    Preview

We have some solid theories, but we still don't truly know how (or why) pre-modern men moved enormous, heavy stones thousands of miles and erected them into a pre-historic ceremonial site.
