10 Unusual Productivity Hacks to Try This Week
At the shop getting the car serviced, and wondered about ways to improve my productivity. So, asked ChatGPT and got this... My thoughts/comments in [brackets].
1. The Two-Minute Rule
If a task takes less than two minutes to complete, do it immediately. This prevents small tasks from piling up and cluttering your to-do list. [I do this between major tasks and before taking breaks.]
2. Work in 90-Minute Cycles
Instead of focusing on the standard 25-minute Pomodoro technique, try working in 90-minute intervals followed by 20-minute breaks. It mirrors the body's natural energy cycles. [Will start this, more for physical issues, as I'll sit and work for hours without getting up if I'm on a roll.]
3. Task Batch Similar Activities
Group similar tasks together (like answering emails or making phone calls) and tackle them all at once. This minimizes context-switching and boosts efficiency. [Standard for me when office traffic allows.]
4. Time Blocking Your Distractions
Allocate specific blocks of time in your schedule for distractions (like social media or non-essential tasks). This helps manage them while preventing distractions from creeping into productive periods. [Kinda do this, but maybe an intention effort would help.]
5. The Five-Minute Micro-journal
Spend five minutes at the start and end of your day journaling your intentions and accomplishments. This helps you stay focused and reflect on progress. [In other words, create, review, and update a to-do list. Pretty good with this one...]
6. Do the Hardest Task First (Eat That Frog)
Start your day by tackling the most difficult or unpleasant task first. It creates momentum for the rest of your day. [Don't like this one, but do make that task be"in my face" until I get it done.]
7. Set a Fake Deadline
Give yourself a deadline that’s earlier than the real one. The pressure of the fake deadline can motivate you to finish early and reduce procrastination. [Always do this...just in case things go south during the lead-up to the deadline.]
8. Use "Temptation Bundling"
Pair something you enjoy (like listening to music or a podcast) with a less enjoyable task. This makes completing the task more appealing. [Almost always have music on. Might help me to do the opposite - no music until I have it done.]
9. Say "No" to Non-Essential Tasks
Be selective about the tasks you take on. Politely decline commitments that don't align with your priorities to protect your time. [This is where I could improve a lot, but those non-aligning tasks are usually what the boss wants.]
10. Walk While You Think or Take Calls
Walk around during brainstorming sessions or phone calls. Physical movement can stimulate creativity and help you focus better than sitting at a desk. [Like this, but don't have the capability when in the office.]
These hacks are practical yet unconventional ways to boost your productivity and break out of routine habits.
