10 ways AI & Automation will create more jobs

There is a fear that one day all human jobs will be replaced by AI and Automation. We have been there before.

People feared machines would make workers obsolete at the dawn of the industrial revolution. However, the industrial revolution created new opportunities (service/knowledge workers) and new industries, resulting in more jobs than ever.

So while it is true that AI and automation will lead to job losses, it is also true that new opportunities will emerge.

10 ways AI & Automation will create more jobs
Preview

    1. Data Professionals and Coders

AI/Automation scaling will inevitably create a demand for more data engineers, data scientists, and developers

    2. Managers and Support Staff

Executives are hands-off and need managers to oversee these projects regardless of how automated the business is.

This will mean the administration of technology projects which need IT staff, developers, middle managers and project managers.

    3. AI/Automation Quality Assurance

In the book, "My Personal MBA", the author notes that, "the more efficient the automated system, the more crucial the contribution of the human operators of that system. Automated systems reduce the need for human effort but make human involvement even more critical."

Automation left unchecked could multiply a black swan event or an error to something catastrophic.

Thus you will need people to oversee and quality control the actions of AI and automation

    4. Ethics, Compliance, Governance and Audit

Oversight and bureaucracy will never go away.

AI models and automation will need an entourage of AI ethicists, model governance, IT support and model tuning.

To ensure AI models are running within specified parameters and will need to guard against biases, issues some real, some imagined.

    5. Automated AI/Automation Managment

Complex systems usually aggregate up to a management system. I predict that most companies will have an assortment of AI models and RPA systems. The company will need a unified corporate-level view of all these solutions.

You can expect a new batch of professions coming out of this.

    6. AI/Automation Politics

When a new standard is brought to bear, expect a cottage industry of critics and more external watchdog organizations.

Journalists, lobbyists and bloggers will likely create polarizing content regarding automation and AI. As either liberating or corrupt.

    7. Government Regulation

I predict you will see some "ministry of" or "department of" covering artificial intelligence or autonomous solutions.

Perhaps at some point, the question of AI sentience will be raised. What new laws and regulations will come about from that?

    8. Consulting

There are always a group of companies that are undeserved and you can expect an increasing number of consulting companies to cater to these companies to bring them into the "4th industrial revolution"

    9. Entrepreneurs

AI is an instrument whose values come from the effective execution of ideas.

You will see a rise of out-of-the-box thinkers who come up with exciting and unexpected business models and ways of using AI in automation in life not thought of.

The new entrepreneur will herald new ideas and put them in the market.

    10. BS Jobs will be created

In the Industrial Revolution, the shifting of agricultural-based jobs created a new cadre of service-oriented BS jobs. Pencil pushers, administrators, and placeholder middle managers were created.

As Graeber notes in his book, Bullshit Jobs: A Theory :

"Automation did, in fact, lead to mass unemployment. We have simply stopped the gap by adding dummy jobs that are effectively made up."

I suspect something similar will happen with the fourth industrial revolution of AI and automation.
