10 ways to add more discipline into your life
1. Start small
Don't try to run a marathon in a month or 5k when you haven't run more than 5 minutes in your life. Start small. Don't even start running. Start walking. Start as small as possible and build up as many 'wins' as possible.
2. Don't beat yourself up over one miss
But tell yourself that you won't ever miss twice - because missing twice leads to missing three times and that slides into not doing.
3. Celebrate small wins
If you want to start running, don't discount the fact that you did a 5 min walk, celebrate that success and chain it to bigger successes.
4. Tie it in with something you're already doing
If you commute to work every day and want to start being more active, you could try parking farther away (might even be cheaper for you too). That way, you're forced to be more active.
5. Reward yourself
Rewarding yourself doesn't always have to be monetary. It can be getting in a workout and then eating a good breakfast. Or having an afternoon snack after you meditate.
6. Do the things you want to do
If you hate running, don't force yourself to wake up early in the mornings to run. Instead, do the things you want to do (bike, walk the dog, weight lifting).
7. Aim for a small but achievable goal
Aim to be active 6 days out of the week. That way, you'll be able to 'miss' one and still achieve your goal.
8. Don't be afraid to reset
So you tried to start a habit but didn't have the discipline to continue? Use the start of a week, month or year to reset.
9. Create systems, not goals
Be active is a system. Run for 30 minutes every day is a goal. The problem with goals is that you have failed them until after you have achieved them. Systems are successes if you have 'been active'.
10. Discipline starts first thing in the morning
Start your day off right. Wake up early (get enough sleep). Don't hit the snooze button. Get right to the things you want to accomplish in the morning.
