10 ways to manage your emotions
1. Pause
Don't respond right away.
2. Be aware of what you're feeling and why
A good way to pause is to recognize what you're feeling. Say it out loud. "I feel angry"
3. Check yourself at the door
Brendon Burchard has a great practice where before he does anything (goes home, enters a meeting), he sets an intention for what he would like the next interaction to be.
4. Breathe deeply
Another good way to pause, take three deep breaths before responding
5. Draft an email you never send
Sometimes, just getting it out of your head can be a good way to analyze what you're feeling and what to do about it
6. Walk away
7. Use the 24 hour rule
Don't respond right away. Wait 24 hours to react.
8. Approach someone you trust
You might not be sure what kind of feelings you are feeling or whether it's the right response. Approach someone you trust and walk them through the situation.
9. Journal
Reflect. Ask yourself questions. What happened? How would someone who observed the situation describe it? What was your interpretation of it? What decisions or next steps do you want to take?
10. Be a third party
As something is unfolding, act as if you're an angel observing the situation with you in it.
