10 ways to specialize as a language teacher to increase your rates
French is my native language, but my English has surpassed it over time, and I feel that French would be harder to teach. However, if I were to teach it, I thought it might be a good idea to teach it through comedy. What would be some other ways in which you could specialize in order to offer a unique service and stand out from the crowd?
1. Teach through comedy
Have them write jokes and humor pieces in the target language, even if they're just translating from their native language. Luca Lampariello teaches the bidirectional translation method: translate your target language into your native language, and then translate again the other way around for better memorization. That's how I understand it, but I haven't tried it yet. What if adding a creative component to it would help even more?
2. Teach through music
3. Teach through poetry
4. TPR Storytelling
From Wikipedia: TPR Storytelling (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling or TPRS) is a method of teaching foreign languages. TPRS lessons use a mixture of reading and storytelling to help students learn a foreign language in a classroom setting.
Proponents of TPR Storytelling, basing their argument on the second language acquisition theories of Stephen Krashen, hold that the best way to help students develop both fluency and accuracy in a language is to expose them to large amounts of comprehensible input.
5. Live with the student
Be the student's roommate so they're forced to speak in their target language as much as possible.
6. Teach through writing stories
Have your students write stories in their target language.
7. Have the student record their interactions in the target language
8. Have the student record all their interactions in their everyday language and turn them into a vocabulary list in the target language
The list would include whole sentences and dialogues, not just words. It could be studied in the form of flashcards or used as a basis for conversation practice.
I thought about this idea for a language learning app. This way, the student gets the specific learning material they need. If half of your time is spent talking about business, you'll get exposed to a lot of business-related material during your language learning.
