10 ways TV coverage desensitizes us to violence and (some ) are getting a distorted world view
From the perspective of the USA
1. Cameras everywhere
When something happens in a corner of the world it is available everywhere.
2. 24 hour news cycle
3. The combination of #1 and #2 means that sensational/horrible images get shown repeatedly until the next one is ready
4. Reading/quoting “manifestos” breeds copycats
5. If there is a street protest the size of a city block you can make it look like an entire city is in chaos with camera angles and edits
6. Technology for people to commentate from everywhere
This lets “news” stations continue to whip up excitement about an issue by reaching out for hot takes
7. High definition tv allows text to be shown clearly on screen
So even with the sound off you can be exposed to it
8. Entire shows and series dedicated to crime: Cops, Americas Most Wanted, etc.
