I was having a 7.30AM coffee with a friend of mine, a coach - we always have the most insightful conversations and go away with books and courses to go through!
Today we talked about how negative thought and emotional patterns are the most often causes that keep us in the loop of negative habits, habits that don’t serve our growth and progress in any area.
And we talked about the strategies that are the most helpful for helping us to change our state almost instantly to change our actions, break patterns that don’t serve us and keep growing!
So what are these?
1. WHEN THE PROBLEM IS IN THE MIND THE ANSWER IS IN THE BODY
I don’t remember where I heard this phrase the first time - but it helped me to internalize and never forget this one fact about emotional states - emotions are a summary of the internal states of all our organs and tissues. Change of the heartbeat, change of blood pressure, change of blood sugar, fluctuations of stress hormones and brain chemicals - and you might end up in a negative thought pattern. It’s just a linguistic translation of what’s happening in your body and in the environment.
The easiest, fastest, universal way to change your biochemistry, blood and brain chemistry - movement. Change the way you move, or simply your posture (like a superman pose) - studies show, it changes your feelings and thoughts in an instant!
You don’t even have to exercise and break a sweat! Just don’t sit, don’t ruminate. Move your body - and your emotions and thoughts will move too!
2. CHANGE THE SOUNDTRACK and IT’LL CHANGE THE MOVIE
Have you noticed that in movie you always have the music that boosts the effect of the scene?
Like if it’s a scary scene - you aren’t gonna hear some romantic love story music, will you? And even when there’s no movie, we all know how epic or romantic or thriller music sounds like. You put it on and the imagery starts popping into your mind! It’s an unquestionable, universal effect. Screw up the music - screw up the movie!
You don’t have to wait for the movie night to change your state from drama to comedy. You can do it right now! Just dance to the “Friends” soundtrack for a couple of minutes and you’ll immediately feel warm, light and fuzzy, won’t you?
If you don’t like how you feel - just change the soundtrack to make yourself feel how you want and need to feel to show up for the occasion.
3. THE NAME CHANGES THE EXPERIENCE
Have you ever tried a chocolate mousse?
Chocolate mousse made out of overripe avocado, coconut milk and some vanilla stevia? With maybe raspberries on top?
Divine and healthy!
What if I just told to eat a mashed avocado with added cacao and vanilla stevia, would you have the same tasty imagery and desire to try it?
It’s all about how you “label” it.
Sour lemons with sugar or lemonade?
Struggle or a growth experience?
All my plans failed! Or We had an exciting adventure!
It’s all about the story that we tell ourselves that make us feel empowered or like a victim.
