We've all had situations where we've encountered someone who just seems I'll and not fully aware of either themselves or their surroundings.
You must first decide whether intervention is necessary and are you the person to do it. If the person suffering from an altered mental status is family, you're answer is likely to be yes. If it is some you just met or came across, the decision can be harder.
To be able to help someone like this, it is often necessary to identify the underlying reason for their apparent confusion, lethargy, agitation, being just not right. When trying to remember some of the common reasons for altered mental status, use the memory aid taught to rescuers across the U.S.
