Choosing Yourself: Chapter 16: Honesty Makes You More Money - 4 Insights

Being honest with myself requires self-awareness, it requires conscious-awareness.
It seems challenging to make contact with the truth but its far more challenging to try and hold onto something that is not true. We see Truth as the enemy because it packs so much Power that we are afraid of it even though it's the most convenient and liberating choice before us. Honesty and Truth are different versions of the same thing.

Is honesty and truth transformational? Absolutely
Until I learn to be completely honest with myself don't expect me to ever be completely honest with you.
Experiencing honesty in the world has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with me.

    1. What I see in the world is what I'm projecting. The areas to begin to look and notice dishonesty is within myself, not in you. How can I notice dishonestly in you if it's not in me? My dishonesty is my domain, your dishonesty is your domain

Why do we spend so much time noticing dishonesty in others? In my experience I cannot notice anything in you that is not also in me.
What am I being dishonest about?
Who am I lying to, if only to myself?
Let me handle my dishonesty, while you handle yours...sounds fair to me.
Why am I over at your house trying to take out your trash while my trash sits idle on my porch stinking up the neighborhood?

    2. Dishonest people are unhappy enough do we really have hang our Post It Notes all over them? What they need most is kindness and understanding, not ridicule.

    3. Do I tell the truth about everything to everyone? Absolutely, not.

Most of us are not as honest as we believe that we are (that's why we like to project)

Are you honest with yourself about yourself...about you?
Are you honest with yourself about another (about your wife, girlfriend, brother, sister, mother, father, child, and friend)
Are you honest with another about yourself? (Do you tell people what you're really into? What your likes and dislikes are?)
Are you honest with another to that other? (Do you tell John and Susie who you just invited to dinner what you really think and how you really feel about them?
Are you honest about everything to everyone? "Hey Bob, If I'm being really honest with you I think that new startup is a complete waste of your time and by the way that blazer you have on is not very becoming."

    4. Dishonesty keeps us in prison. It makes our world really small.

Why do you think so many of us are not more forthcoming? There's only one reason but it's not very obvious and almost no one will get the answer right if I left the question unanswered.

    We are afraid.
We are afraid of what others may think of us.
You know how much we believe we are John Smith. We can't afford for the reputation of John Smith to be tarnished.
John Smith is tethered to his ego...his made us sense of self. (the lawyer, doctor, entrepreneur, janitor, street sweeper, etc)
Our egos are fragile and they don't like being threatened in any way.
If all we are is bodies....and these bodies have a foul reputation in the world...according to the world...then Who AM I?

What happens if people find out my company is really under water?
What happens if people find out my marriage is in shambles?
What happens if my neighbors in my exclusive neighborhood find out my kids are not attending a prestigious university?
What happens if people find out I'm struggling financially and had to file bankruptcy?
What happens if people find out that my spouse is having an affair?
What happens if people find out my child is addicted to prescription drugs?
What happens if people find out I have millions, billions of dollars at my disposal but I'm still extremely unfulfilled and unhappy?

The Truth has and always will set us FREE but if we're being totally honest (there goes that word again) with ourselves - we don't really want to be free.
