A few tips that I've picked up whilst researching.

They make amazing borders. A triangle look's nice, but a triangle with a few tweaks is 100X better
Black and white look nice add 50 colour's it's realistic. Add one, bright pink or blue and it's Pop art 100X better.
Keep it simple stupid. Complex designs are nice, but simple, simples beautiful. 100 X better.
Add something extra to a simple design. Just one thing and it'll enhance it. 100X better.
Well maybe that's too far. But you should be able to read it without a magnifying glass. Simple, bold, good contrast to the background. Readable text 100X better.
