Do your own research
Yesterday I saw a random post being advertised to me on Facebook.
It was a photo of a gravestone reading 'I did my own research'
Then i saw all the laugh reacts and comments.
Why's that funny? Not the fact it's depicting a dead person, but because questioning and doing your own research is something that should be encouraged, not mocked.
1. My Responce
'Questioning is laughed at.
Blindly following is praised.
Madness.'
Blindly following an 'expert' is what leads to brainwashed cult members who follow every word of te great leader. Questioning is your best defence. 'Leader said X, but that's a lie. I don't think we should trust them' Vs 'Leader said X. If leader said it it must be true.'
2. Don't get me wrong
Many assume that when I encourage questioning what i really mean is 'blindly follow that guy on youtube'. I don't mean that. They should be questioned just as much.
3. The Experts
Why do I encourage questioning the experts? Because they're people too.
People lie.
People are misinformed.
People make mistakes.
All of which lead to falsehoods being pushed and without questioning falsehoods being believed and acted upon.
4. Questioning
'Haha! You think you or Jimmy on Youtube know more than the experts, you're such an idiot.'
No.
But you don't need to be an expert to point out a falsehood.
You just need basic logic and people reading skills.
For example The covid Vaccines.
You didn't need to be a medical Genius to work out if you should get one.
Covid was said to have killed/hospitalised less than 1% of those who caught it.
Even less for younger and healthier individuals.
The vaccine had an unknown odd of giving you an unknown side effect.
Risk/reward
If your young/healthy and catch covid you have very low odds of anything serious happening.
You also have unknown odds of something serious happening with the vax.
To me, taking the low odds vs the unknown odds made far more sense. Sure the unknown could have been lower than the already low odds, but it could have also been higher, far higher it didn't seem worth the risk.
If you were unhealthy/old the calculations change. The risk of covid becomes far higher and as a result the unknown risk becomes far more favourable.
Despite not being an expert. My basic risk/reward skills gave me an educated answer.
5. Seatbelts
But you blindly trust that seatbelts will save you.
Do I? I've tons of data that shows that wearing a seatbelt is far safer than not wearing one. There's also no downside to wearing one.
Higher chance of living/Might agitate your shoulder slightly
Seems like a fair deal to me.
It's the same with next to all cases of 'Well you blindly believe ___' If it turns out that you do blindly believe take the time to question it. Especially if the risk is greater than the reward.
6. Cult
Only cults don't want you questioning.
If you don't question the leader can get away with anything.
Evil people exist at the expert level, in all fields. They'll manipulate you if they can. The idea that they should be believed and followed just because they reached the level of expert is unwise.
Question everything.
You may still end up wrong.
But at least you have some level of defence.
7. Am I wrong?
I want to follow my own rulse ad as a result I'll question this as well.
Many think I am for doing this. If you believe I am please explain why.
Thanks for reading.
