Don't wait for opportunities to come to you, create them. (And 5 practical tips for doing so)

99.9% of people would have given up when they found out the person wasn't there.

What am I talking about?

    1. David Perell's story that he tells on Isra Garcia's Disrupt Everything podcast.

At the time, he was getting bad grades in school. ( Everything can change when you see the quality of his writing today.)

His last chance to get into a good college, use his golfing skills.

    • He contacts the best coaches in the country by email.
    • He gets an appointment with one of them.
    • He flies across the country to meet him.

Unfortunately, his contact did not show up for the appointment.

99.9% of us would have given up. Not David.

He rents a car. He went to all the golf courses in the area and at the last one he found his contact.

The interview goes well. And he gets into a good college

    2. Why am I telling you this?

We tend to wait for opportunities to come to us.

But often the ones that change your life are the ones you go looking for.

What will you do to create your next opportunity?

    3. When I was 18, I heard a gentleman pitch a business idea to my dad

who was not interested and kindly turned it down.

Within days, I called the person back and started my own business.

I learned sales, negotiation and made a very good living. And it helped me to land my first corporate job later. After that, I climbed the ladder from salesman to C-level

    4. There are no miracle recipes, but looking back at all the stories I've heard or experienced, they (often) have these points in common

    • Proactivity: asking for the appointment, the call, the meeting.
    • Rejection: these are often activities that take you out of your comfort zone with a risk of rejection.
    • Creativity: when things don't go as planned (and they never do), you have to create new options.
    • Effort: you must be willing to make the disciplined effort to constantly learn.
    • It's already too late: when presented as an opportunity, it's (often) too late. There is less competition when you take the lead.

    5. Don't wait for someone to come and get you. Seek to create your next opportunity.
