FIVE HABITS THAT WILL HELP ME THROUGH CHALLENGING TIMES
1. Learning
I enjoy learning how things work. Maybe I'm addicted to it?
My favourite kind of learning is anything that's counter-intuitive. Freakonomics blew my mind, and the podcasts continue to help me grow.
2. Listening
No matter how deeply I'm focussed on what I'm doing, I listen to what's going on around me. People tend to talk about obstacles, challenges, issues... and if I know what they're stuck on, maybe I can help.
3. Thinking
Okay, I know, everybody thinks. But I like to put some time aside to just sit/walk and daydream. Some of my best ideas have come from this mental downtime.
4. Comedy
The great Bill Hicks said that he believed comedians are the people who, as a consensus forms, say "Wait a minute..."
Comedy is what happens when unstoppable observation smashes into immovable reason.
5. Acceptance
I always want things to improve.
I want things done right.
I used to try and go through life like an 80s action movie hero with unlimited bullets.
But the reality is, I'm like a cowboy in a western with a six-shooter. I have to be selective about which problems I solve.
And the rest must be tolerated, at least for now.
