Four Ways to Coach Workers
As your business grows you are going to add workers ... and challenges. With each worker comes baggage (good or bad) and there will be times where you need to coach them into the best version of themselves. Today, let's discuss the T.A.L.K. model.
1. TELL them how you see it
When a worker is not doing something as well as you like it to be, TELL them specifically what the problem is. Be as specific as possible "John, on April 12th you were 30 minutes late for work" "Jane, your project was due on Friday and it's Monday and I still don't have it"
2. ASK for feedback
You want to "get inside their heads" to see why they failed to hit the target. So ask! "John / Jane why did this happen?" And then shut up and wait for a response
3. LEAD them to a solution
John/Jane gave you their insight and if it is legitimate then you are fine. However, if they are in an alternate universe then you need to LEAD them to a solution that will allow them to keep their job. "John, the team meets at 9 am each day, to be a part of this team we need you here for our morning meeting". "Jane, we have deadlines for a reason, for your position it's vital that all deadlines are hit"
4. KEEP at it until it sticks
This means you follow up in a week or two. If they made a postive change then praise them. If they are still exhibiting bad habits then "give them an opportunity to keep their jobs". This means you give them an ultimatum which requires behavioral change. If they step up, they keep their job. The choice is up to them!
