How to have a 'sense of Enough?'

When Athletes win Bronze or Silver, they’re thinking of a comeback to win Gold next time. Meanwhile the Gold Medalist is also thinking of how to retain their position on the next run.

No one is exempted from the feeling of the "need for more."

In terms of wealth, irrespective of whether you’ve financial freedom or not – our financial decisions are probably one of the most important decisions we make daily as it affects everyone of us just like health.

There’s this feeling of ‘humbleness’ when you see what others are earning with the same knowledge or skill in different settings or by simply comparing a low-income area such as the third world to a high-income area. What you pay as rent is what someone who is considered wealthy in a poorer setting earns as salary per month.

While there may be no need for this comparison – since the the cost of living and expenses are entirely unalike: The Internet today has changed and is bridging a lot of this gap.

When you want anything bad enough, you find a way.

You can literally live anywhere in the world and earn as much as anyone else in the world - at least in theory and if you put your mind to it.

So, this quest to push yourself and reach your highest potential even with the rewards is REAL and is something that drives most of us.

Unfortunately, when fueled by greed or uncontrolled/thought of without ethics or conscience– it has led to lots of crimes and scams all over the world.

It’s also why so many people live above their means and are in several debts irrespective of how much they earn.

Reading the chapter the book "Psychology of Money" was one of the primary motivation for writing this.

    1. Stop Unhealthy comparison with others

I'm always motivated when I see young kids making insane amount of money online – this was the hunger that first helped me build a business online and still covers my basic needs …

But I’ve never lost sleep thinking about how much someone else is making or, worse, spending daily.

    2. Choose your Game to play

I saw this in practicality when I was in the Pharmacy space – so many people were doing it for the love of learning/applying knowledge and also for SERVICE.

Both are interesting, but not compared to the game and quest for “freedom” and "independence,” which I prefer. That’s why I find joy writing this and consuming other great works in the Entrepreneurship and personal development spaces.

Almost everyone you see has their own motivation for doing one thing or another. Find yours, and it will make it easier to track your progress in a healthy manner.

    3. Stop moving the goal post aimlessly! (Enough is as good as Feast)

You don't need to have a lot in order to be happy. Appreciate the simple things in life and be thankful for what you have. You'll be surprised at how much happiness you can find in the little things.

Lots of studies have shown and confirmed that, in terms of happiness and fulfilling our basic needs – once we exceed a certain level of income; we don’t get influenced by them anymore.

So to be happy and having this feeling of “enough” - know that you don’t need an extravagant amount of money or achievement in life to attain this.

It’s a work in progress. It’s not enough to just set the goal, gotta create the plan and then execute it

Set goals but don’t tie your identity or sense of worth to newer goals or new targets:

“ The hardest financial skill is getting the goalpost to stop moving.
It gets dangerous when the taste of having more – more money, more power, more prestige – increases ambition faster than satisfaction. In that case one step forward pushes the goalpost two steps ahead. You feel as if you’re falling behind, and the only way to catch up is to take greater and greater amount of risks.” - Psychology of Money

    4. Practice Gratitude

Practice Gratitude always irrespective of the circumstance you find yourself.

Learning to be content with what you have can be a difficult task.

It is easy to be caught up in the mentality of always needing more, but it is important to be happy with what you have.

You can start by practicing gratitude and learning to appreciate the things you have.

Just because something doesn’t work out the way that you wanted it to doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough… It could just mean it wasn't meant for you or better still you need to try again.

"Gratitude is the sign of noble souls - Aesop."

    5. Focus on helping others

Its clear whose interest you’re working towards by the actions you take.

Tony Robbins once got into trouble for helping people improve their lives' through NLP coaching before he was "qualified" to do so

His response was simple: "we know how to help people, let's go help people"

The more you are interested in service and the benefit of others – the less you want to mess with things like your conscience and reputation which matters a lot to the people you’re trying to serve.

    6. Cut down the Lifestyle

There’s a pressure we get from the society to increase our spending with every increase in income.

But no single wealthy or financially independent person I know live above their means.

They may have one or two luxury items – but the vast majority of their spending are not made to impress the public or push them into financial disasters.

    7. Move with a Purpose

Use your core why to fill the void of why you’re doing something at every point in life.

One could by all external measures be living a great life: Technology executive, entrepreneur, family man, vacations, toys. BUT dying on the inside when they lose feel purposeless.

Nothing worse than achieving “success”, and now looking at it all and asking: “IS THIS ALL THERE IS?”

Everything starts feeling like going through the motions.

The more success you achieve, the more purpose become unavoidable.

    8. Don't settle for less!

Do what you need to do to make yourself happy and don't settle for anything less.

But sometimes you gotta stick to the core rules and values of the game before thinking of breaking some

Elon Musk got tired of the censorship and lack of free speech in the world and ended up buying Twitter to fulfill this need.

FTX crashed recently because the founder couldn’t stick to the basic rules of trust and proper management of investors/client’s funds.

Sometimes, you just have to say enough is enough. If you're not happy with what you have, then make a change.

Life is too short to be unhappy.

    9. The Magic of Enough

It is important to find a balance in life. Having too much or too little of anything can be detrimental.

Find a happy medium and learn to be content with what you have.

You'll be much happier and more fulfilled if you do.

    10. The Power of Enough

When you learn to be content with what you have, you'll be surprised at how much power you have.

You'll be able to focus your energy on more important things and you'll be less likely to be controlled by your possessions.

Instead, you'll be in control of your life and you'll be able to live a much more fulfilling one.

    11. Bonus point: Live in the present

One of the best ways to have a sense of enough is to live in the present. When you are always chasing after the next thing, you never have time to appreciate what you have.

If you can focus on the here and now, you will be much more content with what you have.
