Make yourself indispensable
H/T @wyip
I agree with this premise but I’ve also witnessed the downside.
1. You generally end up working harder than your co-workers.
2. Your mobility may get limited
Because you are indispensable, your boss may do anything to prevent you from leaving; including poor references and hindering promotion.
3. You may end up being taken for granted.
4. You may end up being judged or rated on a different scale than your co-workers.
5. This causes you to run a higher risk of burn out….
Which can have both physical and mental health consequences.
6. Unlikely, but you may just end up hating a job you loved.
7. This list depends on you having a selfish boss who also happens to be a poor leader.
If you don’t, then congratulations. But I bet we all have a boss in mind when reading this.
