Most Dangerous Occupations in the United States
There is a lot of myths and stereotypes when it comes to dangers in the workplace. How dangerous is it to be a police officer? What about convenience store clerk? Although the list varies slightly from year to year and from source to source; these are the most dangerous jobs in the United States according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

1. Logging/Fishing/Hunting Occupations
While a relatively small number of people are employed in this broad category, per capita they rank #1 every single year.
2. Aircraft pilots and flight engineers
3. Derrick operators in oil, gas, and mining
4. Roofers
5. Garbage Collectors
6. Iron workers
7. Farmers
8. Firefighting Supervisors
This one intrigued me so I dug a little deeper as to why Supervisors were statistically being fatally injured than firefighters in general. My research shows that while most first line supervisors face the same amount of danger on the fireground as firefighters in general; they are killed much more frequently in traffic related incidents. This may come from the greater exposure to traffic on the scene, as well as the "captain's seat" in most fire apparatus is statistically the most dangerous location in a moving vehicle. The data was quite clear.
9. Power Linemen
10. Crossing Guards
Makes perfect sense but still surprised me.
11. So what about Police Officers?
Statistically they "only" rank 22nd. Safer than landscapers, groundskeepers, highway workers of all types, man construction workers, and some mechanics. But.... cops are still 4.1 times more likely than average to be killed or injured on the job.
12. And Convenience Store Clerks?
While there is no doubt that convenience store clerks have a dangerous job; statistics are very hard to come by. These positions are often lumped in with retail sales, grocery sales, or automotive service fields. This broad category and variety of classification makes it difficult to get an accurate answer. Combine this with the fact that the rate of violent crime at convenience stores has been dropping because many convenience stores have gone to great lengths to harden themselves as targets and this has helped keep their employees safer. So how dangerous is it? I think only the clerks know for sure. Would you take the job?
