Notes For Walker Fire Annual Meeting
On Memorial Day Saturday, Walker Fire has it's annual meeting which includes a report to the community from me (fire chief) and the election of new board members.
1. New fire truck.
This was the big news of the year so obviously going to talk about that.
2. New Volunteers
We had a open house back in November that brought in 6 new recruits and we've also picked up another 5 or so other recruits along the way and they all seem to be sticking with it.
3. Fire service complexity
This is something I isolated years ago. Every aspect of the fire service and become more complex and even though we are an all-volunteer, donations based department, we need to be able to keep up with most of how the industry which are are generally doing.
4. Fire season/Monsoon season
Usually our fire season runs from early May until the Monsoon rain starts around July 4th. Those dates aren't set in stone, just a good rule of thumb. Typically in this report I include some sort of report on what is expected for this year's weather.
5. Airbnb/VRBO rentals
More and more cabins here are being rented out and too many of the homeowners do not educate about season fire restrictions or more generally about the fire danger we have here. Invariably this leads to a lot of calls for service where we go to a house and tell people that the ordinance says "no fires."
