1. Discovering the unity within.
“We are led to Believe a Lie
When we see not Thro the Eye
Which was Born in a Night to perish in a Night
When the Soul Slept in Beams of Light
God Appears & God is Light
To those poor Souls who dwell in Night
But does a Human Form Display
To those who Dwell in Realms of day.”
- William Blake
Blake suggests that we are often misled by false beliefs. He's highlighting the tendency we have to accept untruths as reality. Blake distinguishes between merely seeing with the physical eye and perceiving with deeper insight. The "Eye" is a more profound, intuitive understanding. Blake highlights the transient nature of our superficial perceptions. Things that are quickly formed - like ideas or judgments made in ignorance - are also quickly lost. Blake says that the soul, when not truly awake, is still surrounded by enlightenment "Beams of Light" but it remains dormant.
God is Light, a common metaphor for truth, enlightenment, and divine presence. Blake also suggests that divine truth is akin to light. Here, "Night" symbolizes a lack of spiritual awareness. He is saying that for those who live in ignorance, God appears as light, offering potential for enlightenment. And those who live in a state of clarity, as opposed to ignorance. “Realms of day” is a state of awareness and understanding.
William Blake was onto something profound. He’s talking about the illusion we live in, the darkness of believing we’re separate from the light of God. And that’s the core of what Jesus is tearing apart in the Course: the ego’s lies about separation.
The ego is a master of deception. It’s been spinning its web of falsehoods from the start, telling us that we’ve been cut off from God, that separation is real, and that we’re alone in this. None of it is true.
So let’s cut through the illusion: what you see isn’t the whole picture. Bodies look different, but beneath the surface, we’re all facing the same fears, guilt, and struggles. We’re all part of the same messed-up world that the ego has created, but we also share the potential for unity and peace.
The only real choice is between the ego’s lies and the Holy Spirit’s truth. The ego wants you to believe in separation, to think that our differences matter, and that we’re isolated. The truth is, we’re all fundamentally the same. Our fears, our hopes, our anxieties — they’re shared. The real power lies in recognizing this and choosing the mindset of unity and forgiveness.
When Jesus tells us not to believe the lies, he’s cutting through the fog: Nothing and no one can sever you from the truth of who you are. We all face the same struggles and seek the same joy. The only thing that brings suffering is choosing the wrong teacher — the teacher of pain and separation.
So, here’s the choice: Will you buy into the ego’s deception or embrace the Holy Spirit’s truth? Will you let the illusion of separation dictate your life, or will you awaken to the oneness that’s been there all along?
Remember: The original lie is just that — a lie. It’s never been true, and it never will be. So today, see through the illusion. Choose unity. Choose truth. Watch as the ego’s lies crumble and the light of truth shines through.
