Reading a paper map and planning a route
H/T @RayInNJ
1. Locate your position on the map.
2. Orienting the map
Turning the map so it lays the same direction you are looking. Not critically necessary but may make the rest easier.
3. Locate your Destination.
Is it on this map or do you need another?
4. Locate the map key
This gives you the scale, which helps you calculate distance. It also tells what the colors and symbols mean. ie. It that a street or a highway? How steep is that hill.
5. Plot each leg of your course.
It is almost never a straight line
6. Establish the waypoints
ie. Turn at Main St.
7. If a waypoint seems complicated, add a stop point.
ie. If we pass the Walmart, we went the wrong way at the roundabout.
8. Before starting out, get a general idea of the route
We’re mostly heading NE. Northeast, not Nebraska.❤️😜
9. If you get turned around, this can help you get back on track.
ie. If we keep heading downhill, we’ll reach the river which we can follow to town.
10. Enjoy the journey.
It might end up being more important than the destination.
