Stop chasing magic

Whether it's fitness, making a decent living or training your dog... it's time to stop wishing it just happens magically.

    1. Looking for the silver bullet

There's not one. The term silver bullet is also a metaphor for a simple, seemingly magical, solution to a difficult problem:

    2. Genius/guru pedaling a "breakthrough" as the answer

Yes, you may get realizations along the way, but success in fitness or in dog training comes with fundamentals and consistency. Breakthroughs come with consistency. Practice so often that you begin to do the thing without thinking about it. That''s breakthrough.

    3. Training fads and trends

Courses and seminars based upon the biggest training trends of the moment that don’t actually fix issues we really have comes down to good marketing, not success. You end up spending money on bells and whistles, hoping to skip the hard part...

When do we get to the good part?

By practicing the fundamentals. Every day.

Fads and trends go away. Fundamentals get you from beginner to master.

    4. Not a trend but a tracker

If you want to change a habit... get fit, get healthy, have your dog as your training partner, have a well trained dog...start tracking it. It's just like NotePD. When you see a running streak going, when you've got days in a row, distance, steps, accumulated time, it's motivating to keep going. Figure out a way to track your progress.

Some of the tools I use to track health and fitness and my dog's life with with me as my anti-anxiety co-pilot are:

    Garmin 4 Runner

    Fitbark

    Notion.io (habit tracker)

    NotePD

    5. If you're chasing the magic it's a great invitation to avoid the terribly non-sexy work

Mastering the un-sexy foundational principles of health, learning to tackle things like anxiety through a better relationship with your dog takes putting in the consistent effort.

That doesn't mean huge blocks of time. Don't think about staying motivated with all or nothing principles. Think about staying consistent with very short blocks of time.

Stop chasing magic and start getting consistent! You'll find me doing that over here in Calming the Chaos.
