Ten Easiest Herbs to Grow / Maintain

As spring approaches, I'm thinking about trying again with growing herbs. Have done 1,2,3,7 before. One side of our back deck is mint (helps keep skeeters again) and chive that come back all the time despite the mint not liking to share the space. Just wish I could keep basil alive... in any form to start, they crap out quickly for me.

    1. Basil

    • Thrives in warm weather and sunlight
    • Grows quickly from seed or starter plants
    • Frequent harvesting actually encourages more growth
    • Great for pesto, pasta, and salads

    2. Mint

    • Extremely hardy and fast-growing
    • Tolerates partial shade
    • Perfect for containers (it spreads aggressively in gardens)
    • Used in drinks, desserts, and sauces

    3. Chives

    • Very low maintenance
    • Perennial that comes back every year
    • Cut what you need and it regrows quickly
    • Mild onion flavor for eggs, potatoes, and soups

    4. Parsley

    • Tolerates cooler weather
    • Grows well in containers or gardens
    • Can be harvested continuously
    • Popular for cooking and garnish

    5. Thyme

    • Very drought tolerant
    • Prefers well-drained soil and sun
    • Hardy perennial in many climates
    • Strong flavor—great for meats and vegetables

    6. Oregano

    • Extremely resilient
    • Thrives in dry conditions
    • Perennial that spreads easily
    • Classic herb for pizza, pasta, and Mediterranean cooking

    7. Rosemary

    • Very hardy once established
    • Prefers lots of sun and minimal watering
    • Can grow into a small shrub
    • Excellent with roasted meats and potatoes

    8. Cilantro

    • Fast-growing from seed
    • Prefers cooler weather
    • Harvest early and often
    • Essential for salsa, tacos, and Asian dishes

    9. Dill

    • Grows quickly from seed
    • Very low maintenance
    • Attracts beneficial insects
    • Great for pickles, fish, and salads

    10. Sage

    • Drought tolerant and hardy
    • Perennial in many climates
    • Prefers full sun and well-drained soil
    • Classic flavor for poultry and stuffing
