Ten Household Rules That Sound Petty Until They Save Your Sanity
1. The scissors live in one place
Not “wherever someone last used them.” One place. Like civilized people.
2. Do not put an empty container back
Empty milk, empty cereal box, empty coffee canister. That is not storage. That is fraud.
3. Shoes do not become hallway furniture
A pair by the door is normal. Seven pairs is a booby trap with laces.
4. If you use the last paper towel, toilet paper, or trash bag, replace it
The next person should not have to discover your optimism.
5. No mystery cups left around the house
A half-finished drink becomes a science project faster than anyone wants to admit.
6. The remote returns to the same spot
Searching the couch cushions is not a family tradition.
7. Trash goes in the trash, not near the trash
Near the trash is just trash with commitment issues.
8. Laundry must keep moving
Washer to dryer. Dryer to basket. Basket to drawer. The laundry room is not a train station.
9. Do not start a new pile without sentencing the old pile
Every pile believes it is temporary. Every pile lies.
10. Close the cabinet, drawer, door, lid, and loop
A peaceful house is mostly made of small things being returned to their finished position.
