Ten More Things We Believe That Probably Aren't True
#7 was a surprise...
1. Lightning never strikes the same place twice
It does—and frequently. The Empire State Building gets hit around 25 times a year.
2. If you touch a baby bird, the mother will abandon it
Most birds have a poor sense of smell and won’t reject chicks touched by humans.
3. Humans evolved from chimpanzees
We share a common ancestor with chimps, but didn’t evolve from them.
4. Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world
By elevation, yes—but Mauna Kea (from base to peak) is actually taller.
5. Sugar makes kids hyper
Multiple studies show no link between sugar and hyperactivity—it’s often the setting or expectations.
6. You need to wait 24 hours to report a missing person
False. You can and should report someone missing immediately.
7. The Coriolis effect determines toilet flush direction
That’s caused by toilet design, not the Earth’s rotation.
8. Bats are blind
All bats can see, and some even have excellent vision in low light.
9. Hair and nails keep growing after death
Not exactly—skin shrinks due to dehydration, making hair and nails appear longer.
10. Dogs sweat by panting
Panting helps cool them, but they actually sweat through their paw pads.
