Ten Ways To Come Up With Ten Ways To Write A List
Figured I needed a little twist to try to refresh my list writing process.
1. Change the frame
Write the same list as tips, mistakes, myths, questions, steps, or rules.
2. Switch the audience
Rewrite it for a beginner, expert, kid, skeptic, or retiree.
3. Flip the tone
Make it serious, funny, sarcastic, inspirational, or brutally honest.
4. Reverse it
Turn “what to do” into “what to avoid.”
5. Add constraints
Limit each item to 5 words, one sentence, or a specific format.
6. Use analogies
Turn each point into a comparison (sports, cooking, business, etc.).
7. Tell micro-stories
Each list item becomes a quick example or scenario.
8. Rank or score
Order items from most to least important, or assign ratings.
9. Change the structure
Use headlines, questions, commands, or fill-in-the-blanks.
10. Remix sources
Pull ideas from past lists, conversations, or notes and recombine them.
