Ten Ways To Streamline Your Daily Routine
And my self-rating on each.
1. Decide tomorrow the night before
Pick clothes, meals, and top priorities so mornings start on autopilot. [8/10... preparing lunch is my downfall.]
2. Create a short “must-do” list
Limit daily priorities to 3–5 items that actually move the needle. [6/10 - 9/10 at work, 3/10 at home]
3. Batch similar tasks
Group emails, calls, errands, or admin work into dedicated time blocks. [7/10... except after 10:30 or so when most of our office staff are in and interruptions begin]
4. Use default choices
Eat the same breakfast, follow a set workout, or use templates to avoid decision fatigue. [5/10 - my default choices don't get things done. Nap, doomscroll, etc.]
5. Automate reminders and recurring tasks
Bills, appointments, and routine check-ins should never rely on memory. [7/10, working on this]
6. Designate homes for essentials
Keys, wallet, phone, glasses—same place every time, no exceptions. [9/10, except when the family uses things in the kitchen or from my desk. "Where are the damned scissors!"]
7. Set time limits, not just tasks
Work expands to fill the time available; give it a container. [4/10 - started with this, but need to do more here.]
8. Eliminate low-value friction
Unsubscribe, declutter, and remove steps that don’t add real value. [3/10, but improving - lots of unsubscribing lately and using ChatGPT to summarize e-mails. The declutter is the sticking point with the Mrs.]
9. Anchor habits to existing ones
Stretch after brushing teeth, review the day while drinking coffee. [6/10. Just need to anchor exercise / stretching to something else...]
10. End the day with a 5-minute reset
Tidy surfaces, clear your inbox, and prep for tomorrow. [Work - 8/10 including a to do list, home - 6/10, higher if I do a to do list for the next day or days.]
