Ten Work Wishes
Things aren't terrible, but could be a lot better.
1. Full Occupancy
Our group homes have had several long term vacancies. New Jersey has been under fee for service for a number of years, so when vacancies mean lost revenue.
2. Some WFH
I can do 95% of my work from home. The office means distractions and non-productive meetings. Plus, if I can get a 20 minute nap in the early afternoon, I'm much more productive. And, with Spring here, being able to open windows is a motivator.
3. Co-Professionals Working Co-Professionally
Our folks do good work with our clients. But our managers prefer to do client care rather than lead / supervise, much less do the basic submission of receipts and paperwork. And, that makes my job much more frustrating
4. Another Set of Eyes
I'm a "one man show" for anything fiscal. Yes, we have tech to help (like OCR for booking bills), but to get through the day, I have to do tasks that aren't my highest and best use. Plus I make mistakes, of course, and while I generally find them, I may not do so for a while.
5. Consistency
Getting our sh*t together to do the same tasks the same way. Some improvement, but need to get #3 going to fix this.
6. Improved Tech Knowledge - General
All around... some of our folks are petrified to have to use a PC, but have no issues using a phone. I'd like to expand our use of AI for routine tasks.
7. Improved Tech Usage
Awaiting a quote on a paperless filing system for our client related operations, HR, etc. Filing sucks, and finding things can be a PITA.
8. Getting Projects Done
Our board has been sitting on a new Employee Handbook for about two years. About that long ago the boss wanted to move from our expensive (but fantastic) cloud server to SharePoint. But while we got the licenses, and our IT company is ready to get us going, he hasn't yet started to plan, much less start, the move.
We have several other projects swinging in the wind.
9. Better Pay (Of Course) & Benefits
A pension plan would have been nice. NJ requires us to have a 401(k), but only for employee contributions.
It is painful to see government employees, with full benefits, making about 50% more than us actually providing services. And their incompetency is pretty incredible.
10. Backup
We have a small administrative staff, and run a bi-weekly payroll. I handle payroll, so I have to plan my vacation for off-payroll weeks. Can't get the boss to get someone else trained to do it... and the last time the (then) boss did it, at least 19 years ago, it was such a cluster that it took me two weeks to get it straightened out.
