The Difference Between 'You Get To' and 'You Have To' is Your Mindset

Fill in the blanks: I get to __________, and I have to___________.

One sounds like a fun opportunity you are grateful for, and the other sounds like a chore. Here's how I got more get to's and changed my perspective.

    1. Your Life is a canvas

I had a boatload of 'have to's 7 years ago

I was taking care of my physically and mentally disabled brother, after taking care of my elderly mother for 10 years, while raising my 3 sons, and blah, blah, blah, and I wasn't getting to my writing, and felt bad.

Then a billionaire named Jimmy Pattison, the richest man in my province, together with the Real Estate Network brought Oprah Winfrey's tour to town and I bought tickets.

Oprah looked like an angel on the stage, glowing in her yellow gown, as she said: "your life is a canvas, you paint what you want on it."

    2. You can paint writing on your canvas, or whatever you want to do with your life. I get to write, I have Oprah's permission

Oprah's words went straight into my ears. I get to write if I choose to. I have to make the choice to get to.

It's your canvas to paint the way you want to. When you say "I get to write." you can switch out all the time wasters and get over your fear of criticism of your writing. I kept writing my blog and was getting better at writing. I no longer have to see writing as a side project I have been doing for 30 years, it can be the focal point on the horizon of my canvas now and in the future.

    3. Oprah changed my perspective about have to and get to

Seeing Oprah live helped me feel her vibration and energy. I listened to her story of being an African American child, raised by her grandparents, sexually abused by someone they knew, how her grandmother's ancestors were slaves, and her grandmother did white people's laundry. No silver spoon for Oprah. She is a living example of anything's possible if you paint it on your canvas and get obsessed with working hard to make it happen .

    4. Oprah's Grandma told her to find some nice white people to work for, like her

Oprah opened her arms wide as if to hug all of us 50,000 people in BC Place Stadium. Smiling, she looked around at the crowd, and said: "I found myself some nice white people to work for Gramma." Cheers erupted.

    5. Energy and 'Get to' Mindset are the most important guides in your life

When you open your mind to making everything a get to, your subconscious mind works overtime to make it happen, by identifying what could be done better by someone else so you can get to your purpose in life - writing. Your canvas becomes your vision of what you want to do.

    6. Your life gets better each time you brush away a have to on the canvas and paint a get to.

You get to write books, you get to write on NotePD, you get to pay your bills, you get to invest. These are my thoughts today. I become grateful for everything, as I continue to paint beautiful colours on my canvas my world expands and changes, bringing new perspectives!

    7. Your Freedom of Thought Comes Before Your Freedom of Action

Your mind starts thinking of how you can eliminate have to's, or to change your perspective on them. For example, I have to do x in order to get to do y, therefore I am grateful for x, because it allows me to write, and now x is a 'get to' I am grateful for'.

    8. You start taking responsibility for your actions and choices

This is tough. You have give up the habit of complaining, and accept that everything you do is your choice. You are the artist at the easel, painting your experience on the canvas. Your complaining is replaced by gratitude for what you are creating.

    9. To complain started to feel like I was doing a bad job at painting the canvas of my life

I started to see that if I didn't like something I was doing, to start an endless loop of talking about what I didn't like about it, was attracting more of what I didn't like. It was my responsibility to carve out writing time. Nobody was coming to grant me this wish. You have to want it bad enough and work hard enough to make it happen, ignoring the opposition from yourself or others.

    10. Your canvas will never be complete

Your growth and expansion will continue to accelerate in relation to how much energy you put into making your life great, and this will spill out onto others as they see your example and benefit from your abundance and magnetic energy. Like Oprah diid.
