1. Progress as an illusion.
Two steps forward, three steps back — it’s the ego’s cruel game, and we’re all playing it in the material world. But here’s the truth: there’s no real progress happening. The material world is designed to trap you in a loop of striving and struggling, making you believe that each setback is just a stepping stone. It’s a sick joke, really. You chase success, love, security, thinking they’ll give you peace, but the ego only feeds on the chaos. One damn thing after another, and you keep thinking you're on the verge of something big. But what if the whole point of this dance is to keep you stuck?
The ego will convince you that you’re making progress — “Look at how far you’ve come!” —just to pull the rug out from under you. It loves conflict, thrives on frustration, and uses time as its biggest weapon. The game is rigged. ACIM would say this ‘forward-backward’ illusion is just a distraction from the real escape: choosing peace, stepping out of the game altogether. What would happen if you stopped dancing?
