The latest quotes I've added to my collection
I like to collect quotes. Here's a few that I've gathered over the last few weeks.
1. Seneca
What I advise you to do is not to be unhappy before the crisis comes.
This reminds me to not become anxious. When the crisis comes I'll be ready to face it. No matter what it may be.
2. Musonius Rufus
If you accomplish something good with hard work, the labor passes quickly, but the good endures; if you do something shameful in pursuit of pleasure, the pleasure passes quickly, but the shame endures.
This reminds me to continue to work hard, even when it looks like I'm getting nothing out of it. I need to keep hope that in the end all the peices will come together and work out for the best.
3. Seneca
Associate with people who are likely to improve you.
I've got good friends. I hope I'm able to improve them just as much as they do me. I Also listen to podcasts and read so I can associate with those that will improve me even more.
4. Anthony De Mello
If it is peace you want, seek to change yourself, not other people. It is easier to protect your feet with slippers than to carpet the whole of the earth.
This serves as a reminder that it's on me to change, not the world. I see too many make themselves sick seeking otherwise.
5. Seneca
Of this one thing make sure against your dying day - that your faults die before you do.
This is the secret to eternal growth. There's always a flaw that can be worked on.
6. Bob Marley
The people who are trying to make this world worse aren't taking a day off. Why should I?
Bob said this after getting shot and continuing on with his concert. I use this as a reminder to stay courageous and to continue to do what's right. The alternative would be much worse, to live in fear whilst evil wins
7. Epictetus
Never say about anything, “I have lost it,” but instead, “I have given it back.” Did your child die? It was given back. Did your wife die? She was given back.
This reminds me to be grateful for everything in my life and be cautious that it could leave me at any minute. By viewing them as a borrowed item instead of my possession, returning them hurts a lot less.
8. Winston Churchill
If you're going through hell, Keep going.
I've felt like I've been going through hell for a while now. This serves as a reminder that folk went through a lot worse during WW2. If they can do it, so can I. I'll come out of this stronger.
9. Martha Nussbaum
You can’t really change the heart without telling a story.
This serves as a reminder that fact's aren't enough. If I want to move people I need to tell a story.
10. Epictetus
First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.
There's a price for everything. Find out what you want and pay the price. It's also a reminder that everything comes with baggage. Find out what you're willing to put up with and seek that out.
