Things I Appreciate About Getting Older
Hat tip to @apkussma for a great idea for a list.
1. Having experience to draw upon
This is relevant for many things including my day job. It's been a little over 30 years since I graduated college and I've worked almost all of that time in the same industry, I've seen some stuff first hand which helps sort through what's happening today a little easier.
2. You appreciate a wider spectrum of popular culture
At 50 you probably appreciate more movies, music and so on than you do at 20. Not a dig at today's 20 year olds, this will pertain to them when they are older too.
3. Sharing what you've learned
There's a right way to do this and wrong way, we need to know this difference.
4. Still being able to get it done
Being in your 40's or 50's (I will let you know about 60's when I get there), having figured a few things out and still being able to get it done physically makes for a great period of your life. This requires work though. Not everyone makes it to 55 at one end of the spectrum versus what Brad Pitt looked like when he was 55. We're not going to look like him but we can stay in shape and keep the middle age spread at bay.
5. Comfortable in your own skin
6. Hopefully you've outgrown the need to keep up with others or impress others
7. Hopefully you've found financial footing
This isn't about being rich. Having an emergency fund and some put away for retirement creates optionality, resiliency and flexibility.
