Things I Remember from School Shooter Protection Training

Last Tuesday my school district did a training on how to protect ourselves in case of a school shooter. This is why I voted for the first time in 14 years on that same Tuesday.

    1. Everyone needs a TOURNIQUET!

Is that not f'd up? The guys in the training said they had one everywhere they went. I learned how to tourniquet my arm and leg.

    2. The higher the better when tourniqueting..

You wanna get up in those pits. Get as close to the arm pit and groin as possible to stop the blood flow.

    3. When you use a tourniquet correctly.. it hurts like hell.

You are cutting off the blood supply so you don't die. so it's gotta be tight as possible. If one tourniquet doesn't work.. use 2.

    4. Using a tourniquet doesn't mean you lose the limb

It doesn't mean you lose the limb.. The movies always show someone losing a limb. It doesn't necessarily happen.

    5. If there's a large cut.. stuff the wound.

This was a fun picture to see. Put on some gloves.. grab some gauze and stick your fingers inside of the wound and stuff the wound with gauze. If you are wondering if it felt like army medic training.. sure did.

    6. Grab the Barrel when disarming a person with a semi automatic rifle or pistol

You get in front of them and put both hands around the barrel. You point it to the side and down. Yes they said.. barrels are really hot. Life over limb..

    7. Throwing stuff isn't mean to hurt it's meant to distract

Throw anything and everything. Be as weird a humanly possible. Make the shooter be like what the F is going on in here. I put up claws and growled at our intruder.

    8. Keep your doors locked at all times.

We are now teaching in prisons. Our classroom doors must be locked at all times. We have no idea when something could happen. Shooters want to get as many casualties as possible. If a door is locked.. they move on to one that is not locked.

    9. Keep your phones on silent.

This is a war zone. Don't give away your location.

    10. The fewer the windows the better.

More windows means more visibility. Your goal is to be invisible.

    11. Don't be in a classroom with windows that open to a courtyard.

That's the worse place to be. You want to be on the first floor. Windows facing out into the open.

    12. Flight, Freeze or Fight

Everyone has a different reaction to fear. The instructors said.. the more training you have the more you will know how to behave when that fear arrives. Some people need to be nudged a little to keep moving. They need to be handed the stapler and say "throw this". Some people Find the biggest thing to throw immediately and some people just jump out the window.

    13. Report everything.

I was talking with my friend about this. Remember when saying the word "bomb" in an airport became a huge no no after 9/11. There are soo many new words that can't be said in schools anymore. I am honestly reporting EVERYTHING. I TEACH PRESCHOOL! I am still doing it. We don't have enough admin or resources to handle it all. I learned the hard way this month that unless someone is bleeding or running it's not at the top of their list.

    14. If you want to be heard in a school system.. Be the most annoying person in the school system

You need to be annoying. If you are worried about something. If you're a teacher or a parent or a board member. The person whose attention you are trying to get.. email blast them. every day. Call them every hour.

    15. Be grateful for everything you have.
