Things I've Learned Recently
Nothing earth shattering... but maybe a bit interesting.
1. Old Baseball Leagues
Reading up a bit on some old Leagues - the Federal League, for example. Prompted by (of all things) a Facebook ad for retro baseball tee shirts. The shirts I got included the Lebanon Pretzel Eaters, Asbury Park Sea Urchins, and the Newark Peppers. The latter two are Jersey, and I like eating pretzels explains the first one.
2. NY Jets Thanksgiving Game Appearances
Don't remember any but the "Butt Fumble" game vs. the Patriots.
3. Wheelchair Rugby
My nephew's new bride plays this sport. It used to be called "Murderball." Combines rugby, basketball, and hockey. And is seriously violent!
4. Coffee Cup Safety
My sister in law showed me over the weekend how she lines up the sipping hole on the other side of the cardboard cup's side seam, so if she's driving or otherwise not looking, she can make sure she has the right grip to take a sip without looking at the cup.
5. Side Seam
Had to ask ChatGPT what the side seam was...
6. "New" Outlook Sucks Worse Than The "Old"
Got forced onto this by a recent update... and they've taken out the functions that I use like flags. And they removed the ability to return to the "old" version.
7. Must Have Paused Audible Sometime In 2025
The son has some issues reading... following along with Audible has helped him. But now that he's in college, his textbooks aren't on Audible. I'd like to pause it to download the books we've paid for then end the subscription for now. But the option isn't available at this point, which their website says we must have paused already.
8. Jersey / Italian-American slang - lunchmeats
Gabagool and sopsolla - which is capicola and soppressata. The son asked, I found out. And he added both to his shopping list.
9. Oldest Professional Sport Still Played
Sumo, as best as ChatGPT can tell.
10. Wilt Chamberlain Rules
Basketball implemented several rules because of his dominance.
1. On free throws, no running start (he's run and dun) and must keep both feet behind the line until the ball hits the rim.
2. Offensive goaltending was made illegal.
3. Widened the lane to keep him further away from the basket when posting up.
4. On inbound passes, adjusted legal positioning and interference.
