Things that Impressed Me While In Washington DC

Last week I was in Washington DC for a Department Conference. The following is what impressed me

    1. The people that were memorialized in the museums

Walking through the exhibits at the National African American History Museum, I was impressed at the people that that survived slavery, Jim Crow and Reconstruction. They were extremely disciplined, very faithful and amazingly stoic.

    2. The beauty of the monuments at night

    3. The beauty of the Korean War Memorial

The images of the soldiers in the walls and the statues lit up beside them.

    4. How clean the capitol was. I did not see much litter. Someone was picking that stuff up.

    5. How few trash cans were there. I had to carry around a coffee cup forever before I could find a place to throw it away

    6. How much walking I had to do. Every day I reached 10K by early afternoon.

    7. How safe it seemed.

I saw a lot of artfully placed police cars and a lot of officers around the capitol buildings. I also saw a lot of blocked streets so that cars couldn't drive through.

    8. How boring the Ronald Reagan airport was

I didn't see any art on the walls. I didn't see any cultural references to the city it sat in. It was just glass and metal.

    9. How close the hotel was to the airport (15 minutes)

    10. How convenient Uber was.

The ease of being able to request a ride and not not have to futz with tipping someone until after the ride was over, is something I could get used to.
