Thoughts about the “social media” lawsuit 2026

a guy running a class action lawsuit against many of the big players saying that their service targets children

    1. his firm will make an enormous amount of money if they are successful tens or hundreds of millions of dollars

    2. large financial fines would be a cost of doing business I don’t think you could put Facebook or Google out of business with a fine

    3. Too many adults are hooked on these service

    4. information by itself is not inherently dangerous, it is what you do with it

    5. I think that the argument will be mostly about how the algorithm is designed to capture your attention

    6. endless scrolling is certainly not a positive activity

    7. i’m glad my kids are beyond this age because if you get a middle schooler on their phone, it’s very difficult to break that

    8. don’t take away my YouTube! I love my YouTube

    9. The social media companies have maintained that they are simply a bulletin board and other people put the content on it

That has been their legal defense, but the design of the bulletin board is probably what would be discussed and how the psychological triggers are intentionally used to keep you hooked

    10. The next round of lawsuits against AI companies is going to be more interesting

a lot more to go after, but that field move so quickly there’s no way the traditional trial could keep up with it
