Tips For Stellar Karaoke Performances
I'm headed to karaoke night with some friends and I'll be performing several songs. Below are some tips that I'll keep in mind tonight to ensure a quality performance and experience.

1. Pick songs you know the lyrics to
Yes, I know the lyrics are right there on the screen. But your performance will be much better if your eyes aren't glued to the screen. You'll be more confident and you'll be able to read the mood of the room, both of which will improve your performance.
2. When in doubt, pick a crowd pleaser
Picking a song to sing can be overwhelming. There are countless songs to choose from in most karaoke lineups. If you're unsure of which one to choose, go with a safe choice....a song that everyone knows and will have a high likelihood of people knowing the words and singing along.
3. Know the audience
Is the crowd a bunch of current college students in their 20's? Pick something contemporary. Are you in a room full of boomers? Pick something that was popular in the '60's or '70's.
4. Performance over vocal skills
Have fun and don't take yourself too seriously. No one is expecting to witness the next Adele, Celine Dion or Frank Sinatra at karaoke night. If you pick a song that you truly love and have fun during your performance, that energy will shine through and the crowd will pick up on it. It doesn't need to be a brilliant vocal performance. Just have fun and enjoy yourself.
5. Be open to duets
If you have anxiety about having all the eyes in the room on you, consider a duet. This will halve the spotlight and lessen the pressure on you. Duets are also great opportunities to bond with the person that you're singing with.
6. Know Thyself
Don't pick an impossible song that requires a range that you don't have. Go with low hanging fruit - songs that you know you can pull-off without people cringing.
7. Bring Friends
Life is always more fun with friends. If you've got a couple of die-hard friends who will cheer for you regardless of how you perform, it will provide a boost of courage that you might not have if you're performing in front of a room of strangers. Even better, consider doing a song with your friends.
