Tough Love. (1 min 39 sec)

    1. The lie we tell ourselves.

Mighty Companions, let’s cut through the noise — “tough love” is a contradiction, plain and simple. The world would have you believe that love needs a harsh edge, that it’s okay to be cruel as long as you label it as “tough.” But this is where we’ve gone off track. Love and toughness can’t coexist; they’re oil and water, night and day. ACIM makes it crystal clear: Love is gentle, unconditional, and patient. The moment you try to mix it with harshness, it ceases to be love.
Here’s the brutal truth: Tough love doesn’t fix anything. It’s a quick hack, a surface - level attempt to force behavior change. It targets the symptom, not the cause. The world loves to focus on behavior, pushing and punishing to force change. But behavior is just an echo, a reflection of deeper thoughts and beliefs. If you want true transformation, you don’t hack at the branches; you go straight to the root — your mind.
Tough love is the world’s way of trying to control others, but it’s rooted in fear, not love. It’s an attempt to bend someone to your will, all while pretending you’re doing it for their own good. But can you imagine God —pure, infinite Love — being “tough” with His creations? The very idea is absurd. Love doesn’t demand, it invites. Love doesn’t punish, it heals. Love doesn’t need to be tough because it is complete, perfect, and all-encompassing.
When you try to justify harshness as “tough love,” you’re actually resisting true love. You’re masking fear as care, control as compassion. But love isn’t about molding others through force; it’s about transforming yourself through understanding. Change the mind, and the behavior will follow naturally.
So let’s stop pretending that love needs an edge. True love is not tough —it’s the opposite. It’s tender, accepting, and infinitely patient. Anything less isn’t love at all; it’s just a cheap imitation. And deep down, we all know the difference.
