Walking 10,000 Steps a Day

Common threshold cited - no need to enter other than more suggested ways/means of more easily meeting this goal - my challenge to you is to walk 2,500 steps every 4 hours - keeping yourself active throughout the day - have walking meetings - walk to a store - walk to work - walk to a friend’s house - etc! - walk whenever you can - walk for phone calls - walk while listening to podcasts - walk while dictating email responses - walk around your house during bad weather - whatever it takes!

    1. 10,000 steps a day

The average human walks about 2,500 steps a mile. So 10,000 steps would be 5 miles.

    2. Why is this important?

There are many benefits to walking: - it's good for your heart and blood pressure - it's good for your brain (gets oxygen to your brain) - it's good for your back (lifts weights off of your spine).

    3. How do I track my steps?

Get a FitBit or some similar device that tracks your steps.

    4. The goal is not just 10,000 steps but...

10,000 plus whatever you have to walk in order to get where you want to go. For instance, if you have to walk from one building of an office complex to another building of the office complex then that would count as part of your 10k steps.

    5. Note the days when you are below 10k steps and note why.

Perhaps on those days you were stuck in meetings all day or had bad weather or whatever else was going on that kept you from walking more than you did.

    6. When I was younger...

I used to run every morning before work for about 3 miles and then do an hour of weightlifting at night after work. I was in much better shape then than I am now even though I'm only a few years older than that time period.

    7. How can I make this easier?

Find ways during the day when you can take a quick walk (see below). And also find ways when possible to combine walking with other activities so they all add up into more than 10k steps per day. Like listening to podcasts while walking around the house during bad weather might add up enough extra steps so that you meet the goal even on days with bad weather.

    8. What are some other ideas for getting more than 10k steps per day

Here are some common suggestions but there will be others specific to each person based on their habits and locations and situations during the day

Walk down stairs instead of taking an elevator
Take a short walk at lunchtime
Take a short break at work and go outside
Walk around the office instead of emailing someone
Plan phone calls so they are within walking distance
Use Uber instead of taking a taxi
Walk whenever possible instead of driving (can't always do this)
Walk around inside stores instead of using escalators or taking elevators

Walk over bridges instead of driving over them

Take stairs at airports instead of escalators

Walk around while talking on phone
    Walk while listening to podcasts
Take short walks during bad weather rather than stay home all day because it's raining outside

Do errands by foot whenever possible (instead of driving)
    etc
