Ways to handle criticism
My take on a list by @lovingkindnesscomedy
1. Don't react
Once you react, especially if you are upset, you've tipped your hand and you've lost any potential advantage that might have been available. There's value in not letting the person criticizing you know how you feel.
2. Does their opinion matter?
There's very few people whose opinion matters or should matter. It's a powerful skill to weed out and disregard the opinions that don't matter.
3. Are they right?
Regardless of whether you like them or generally value their opinion, are they right? None of us are perfect so then some criticism will be correct whether we like it or not.
4. If they are right, what are you going to do?
You could still ignore them. You could try to work on the issue without telling them or thanking them. You could thank them, tell them you're going to work on it and depending on who they are, ask them for help on how to improve.
