What advice would you give your younger self?

Some thoughts from a 70 year old.

    1. Change jobs or positions every three to five years

If you don't get promoted or a better opportunity in the same company, get out. Sometimes lateral moves are necessary if you change your direction.

    2. Don't get married before you are 30.

Spend time developing a career. Allow yourself time to get started, you can put in the time and travel necessary to become proficient. Use the extra money for investment in yourself and invest in businesses.

    3. Continue your development with online or inperson courses related to you area of interest and areas you want to improve.

    4. Don't buy a house to live in.

A house becomes an anchor that keeps you in the same area looking for work.
Not a good idea to buy a house as a rental property unless it has multiple apartments.

    5. Think seriously about why you need/want a college education.

What is the purpose of going to college? What do you want to get out of it? Try to get summer jobs working in or around your area of interest. Volunteer if necessary to get to see what that career looks like day to day.
You can do college at any time, it doesn't have to be before you have any experience in your area of interest.

    6. Build a solid network of friends, advisors, people that you can help and they can help you.

Spend time daily to keep in touch with people you have met. Connect your contacts with each other.

    7. Take care of your health - exercise, and eat healthy

    Daily exercise, sports.
    Study what eating healthy means.

    8. Be careful of taking advise from old people.

1.) They really don't know why they lived that long.
    2.) They didn't become successful in today's work/business environment.
3.) They never admit how lucky they were.
4.) Maybe their advice on how to survive and how to deal with other people(office politics) has some value.

    9. Travel to see what the world has to offer.

It gives you a comparison to where you grew up. Maybe your town, city, state, country is the best and maybe it isn't. See how the laws/rules are in other places. How are the politics? How are the police?

    10. Make plans for where/who/what you want to to be in 3, 5, 10 years.

Plans can be changed as you learn. It is necessary to have a framework - the big picture. How do you get from where you are now to where you want to be? - What do you need to know, Who do you need to know? Where(physical place) do you need to be?
