What makes me a great teacher

I have an interview soon. This should help me get into the right mindset before that.

I feel exhausted today. I went out to take photos. None turned out that great, all pretty generic. I may be straight back to sleep after this interview.

    1. Usefulness

I found this to be the key factor in raising kids grades. If you make what they're learning useful it sticks, if not it's quickly forgotten. How much do you remember from school? Chances are it's the stuff you use daily or repeated so much back then that you convinced yourself it will be useful someday.

Directions arent that important to know, especially in another language. We have maps on our phones now. But by setting up a chain maze and having kids guide their blindfolded classmate through i made it useful and fun. They all quickly remembered directions and always wanted to play that game again.

Parents should be encoraged to ask questions in english and have kids use what they learnt in their everyday lives. points to sky 'what colour is that?' 'It's blue'. this makes it useful and the challanging aspect makes it fun.

    2. Peak End Rule

We remember the peak and the end of experiences. When at the dentist we remember the highest pain and the pain when we left. By dragging out the stay to the point where the pain has returned to normal levels the patient will have a much better recollection of the experience.

I used the same bias in class. The last ten minutes we'd play a game, ensuring everyone left happy. This happy memory makes their recollection of the class more enjoyable and increases their odds of working hard in order to stay in the class.

I'm currently writing a book about biases and how to use them. I'll be sure to look out how i can use more in order to benifits the students as well as the school.

    3. Social

We trust our friends far more than sales people. Their endorsement means so much more. So by encouraging parents to share their child's progress is an easy way to increase sales and bring in new students.

I did this by encouraging my students to have conversations that could be easily shared. We'd film kids in the class and share to parents and then the parents did the rest of the work. What parent doesn't want to show off their kids progress?
