Why We Are Enough

    1. We were born.

We've already won. The greatest, most improbably miracle already happened, and it is us.

    2. We are uniquely who we are.

It is a virtual impossibility that any other being in the known universe can be exactly as we are. Even identical twins, raised precisely in the same manner by the same parents, attending the same schools, and enjoying the same friends, can have radically different personalities.

So celebrate your uniqueness, and allow others to do the same.

    3. The sun rises and sets on us all.

Let no one allow you to feel belittled, demeaned, or disempowered. We all sleep when we need rest, breathe the same air, and experience the same emotions. No one person is better than another. And assuredly, our days will all end the same. No matter what anyone else says or does, you are enough as you are.

    4. Contentment trumps happiness.

Everyone seems to strive mightily for happiness, yet so often it eludes us. Why?

We have mistaken happiness as our supreme goal in life, yet regardless of where we move, what job we take, who we spend time with, how much money we make, and what we purchase, happiness seems like a butterfly in our hands - in our grasp one moment, and lost to the wind the next.

Happiness is not something to strive for; it is being enough. Recognizing where we are, who we are, and what we're doing, is just right, right now.

    5. Progress trumps perfection.

Improvement is fantastic. But it does not align with being enough when we strive for perfection. There is no perfection. There is only process, and when we are content experiencing the process, then we are enough.

    6. Now is now.

We can travel in our minds to the past or the future in our search for happiness. Or we can recognize we have all we need to live in bliss right here, right now. Now is enough.

    7. No one can ever take you away from you.

You may be robbed and beaten, bankrupt and destitute, castigated and ridiculed, but no one can take you away from you. No object or judgment makes us less or more than who we are unless we let them.

    8. We were not born with a mortgage, optimized LinkedIn profile, 401(k), or master's degree.

Yet we feel like we need these things, and more, to be fulfilled. If indeed we needed them, they would have come with us into this life. Instead, we were born with all we need to live, survive, and thrive in this world.

    9. No one can make the mountain better.

We stand in awe of its grandness and beauty, yet no one says, "It should be taller," or, "It should be moved because it's in the wrong place." No. We only love the mountain for what it is. Are we any less beautiful than the mountain?

    10. Death smiles on us all.

For all our striving, our incessant productivity, our achievements, to what end do we hope to meet when the end for us all is the same?
