YouTube is slowly demonetizing the “YouTubers” and creators. What are some good alternatives for creators to get paid? What does a post-YouTube world look like?
I saw a video by somebody who has a few million subscribers who may have been making a full-time income at one time. She showed how her views have plummeted as she is deemphasized by the algorithm. She has been invited to promote her own videos by basically paying for advertising. YouTube has become a profit maximizing machine, which means changing the deal with the people that created the content. Years ago I used to get about $100 a quarter for my video views. That stopped more than 10 years ago even though I was still getting views. I consume a lot of YouTube content but don't pay much via Patreon (like barely anything). I have bought courses and software that I learned about on YouTube but it does not usually go to the person that made the video. Also now that everyone with an iPhone can be a "content producer" many markets are saturated. What does a post YouTube world look like?
1. Podcasts
Podcasts are a good alternative. I don't think they are as viral as YouTube but they are great for building an audience and making money via sponsorships or Patreon.
2. Twitch
I know a lot of people who make money on twitch streaming video games. This is a bit different than YouTube but the same basic idea.
3. TikTok / Musical.ly / other social media platforms
There are many social media platforms that have video capabilities, including TikTok (owned by Alibaba), Musical.ly (owned by Huaweii), and others. I don't know how viral these will be but it's worth trying to build an audience on them if you want to make money from your content.
