I finished neither of those books yet. Great characters, great writing. Also, Tolstoy's books are long enough to get completely immersed in them. They provide interesting views into Russian society of the 19th century.

This is slightly cheating, but if we're being strict about the #, I would be happy with the first book because I love the way Tolkien builds out the world.

I hated this book at school! So much so that I never got beyond the first chapter. I don't know how I got through a whole term without having read it! Later, when I was around 17, and still studying English, we read Persuasion. A different teacher and a much better experience. I read all of Jane Austen's work and P&P became my all time favourite. I re-read it often. I even converted my husband to being a Jane Austen fan and we often watch the film/TV versions, and also Sense and Sensibility.

1. IT-Stephen King

I first read this when I was 17. I have read it twice since then and find a new twist each time. It is a full time job reading this book and I hesitate to start each time because of the commitment. Each time I do it I am glad I did.

1. Mirrorshades

An early cyberpunk anthology. Many of the best minds in speculative fiction are included. Plus, I like anthologies for their variety and length.
